The Karkin Bioregion exists in the tension between a social foundation and an ecological ceiling. In the Carquinez corridor, this tension is acute: a "Story of Place" defined by localized Social Shortfalls in basic human needs and an Ecological Overshoot resulting from a century of heavy industrial activity. This snapshot, aligned with the California Doughnut Economics (CalDEC) 2026 standards, visualizes the metabolic imbalances that define our current landscape.

The Social Shortfall: With 46% food insecurity among low-income adults and a 12.4-year life expectancy gap, the social floor has collapsed for nearly half our residents. These deprivations highlight the urgent need for local farm and food resilience and community-led health equity systems.

The Ecological Overshoot: Our air quality sits in the 95th percentile for Diesel Particulate Matter, and our waters face a 21% Nitrogen reduction mandate. This overshoot represents an environmental debt that can only be remediated through a systemic transition to a carbon-negative, circular economy.

The Sovereignty Gap: A $12.45 hourly wage gap and 21.6% digital shortfall indicate a highly extractive economic model. Resolving these imbalances requires a shift toward bioregional wealth building and data sovereignty to ensure a resilient future for all Karkin residents.

9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Crockett and Port Costa, California

Did you know that Crockett/Port Costa/Rodeo are at the intersection of a potential poly-Disaster? This Disaster Festival is a theatrical educational and logistical experience (for all ages) to build a local phone tree (asset/needs mapping), identify community members for a CERT+ program, and practice strategies in the case of an actual emergency. From 9 am to 12 pm, there will be doughnuts and coffee, scheduled workshops with asset mapping integrations, and disaster scavenger hunt games to be played throughout Crockett, and lunch provided by Crockett Cocina right before 12 pm. The main Disaster Resilience Hub will be located at Revival Coffee on Rolph Park Drive.
